What we got up to

Friday afternoon and evening

The peer mentors, volunteers and staff arrived ready for a fun weekend at Mylor Adventure Camp, Adelaide. They enjoyed fun team building games on the Friday afternoon before the younger campers joined us on Saturday morning. The ‘Minute to win it’ game was a highlight with participants racing to complete a series of team challenges in under one minute.

Saturday morning

We started with warm up games to help everyone get to know each other. The kids were split into four groups by age, and they engaged in age-appropriate activities such as flying fox, archery, giant swing, giant games, parachute games and fresh water life. These great teamwork activities tested our muscles, balance and endurance and we communicated with our team-mates along the way. During the fresh water life activity the 8 and 9-year-old campers used aquatic nets to collect macroinvertebrates from the river then observe and identify them. The tasty morning tea offerings included biscuits and a selection of fruit and snacks. Lunch was beef, chicken or vegetarian burgers with salad.

Saturday afternoon and evening

During the interactive health education sessions, we had some fantastic group discussions with volunteer health professionals including allergy nurses, allergy dietitians and psychologists. We played lots of games then cooled off in the swimming pool!

At 4pm, we said goodbye to the 8 and 9-year-old day campers who attended just for the day on the Saturday.

For dinner we had choice of meat or vegetarian Deconstructed Nachos with salad. The ever-popular dessert options, apple crumble and chocolate pudding, were quickly demolished.

Sunday morning

We did an interactive medieval-themed activity called Excalibur! This fast-paced game involved campers competing against each other in teams for the ultimate glory. Check out their serious, focused expressions for their team “house portraits”!

Parent Q&A sessions

We ran a Q&A session for parents of the day campers on the Saturday afternoon and a session on Sunday afternoon for the parents of the kids who stayed overnight. During these popular sessions parents received helpful advice from a clinical immunology/allergy specialist and a psychologist.

What did the campers think of the camp?

  • “I liked the activities and everyone was so nice…I loved not worrying about my allergy.”
  • “I really enjoyed this allergy camp because you get to meet up with lots of people that are in the same situation as you and they make everyone very included and welcome.”
  • “The activities were awesome and good to be able to have lots of food and make friends and not having to worry about my allergies.”

What did the parents think of the camp?

  • “[My child] had an ‘awesome’ time and really benefited from the weekend! I also didn’t realise how beneficial it was (albeit a lot more emotional than I was prepared for) to sit in a room of parents and those beautiful young mentors listening to how people manage each day, although incredibly difficult for some.”
  • “It was such an amazing experience for [my child] to be around other kids just like [them]. We appreciate the effort everyone made to put into making the day as safe and fun as possible.”
  • “This is such an amazing experience and opportunity for kids. Not everyone understands how much allergies can affect a person’s life or a family… What an amazing opportunity to be around other kids that get it. Thank you to everyone that made this happen and kept our children safe. You are all amazing.”

Camp wrap up and thanks

We brought together 36 school-aged kids and 12 peer mentors with severe allergies and everyone had so much fun!

A huge thank you to our allergy dietitians and the camp catering staff for creating such a delicious menu while also managing 43 different food allergies and other special dietary requirements.

These camps rely on the support of healthcare professionals and Allergy 250K peer mentors who volunteer at the camps. We thank all the healthcare professionals and peer mentors who gave their time over the weekend and helped us make this camp another huge success!
